METS SET DOWN REDBIRDS WITH LATE SHOT FROM ALFONZO

In a good matchup it was the New York (NL) Mets 3, the St. Louis Cardinals 1 at Shea Stadium.

Turk Wendell(1-0) came on to close the door tight in relief.  No one got on base in his 1 inning.  New York (NL) finished with just 6 hits in the victory. 


John Franco earned his 11th save.  The loss was charged to John Frascatore(1-4) in relief.  He pitched 3 innings giving up 2 hits and 1 walk.

It was Alfonzo's first game back from the disable list and he made his presence known. It was a tied up at one in the bottom of the 8th with a runner on when Alfonzo drove a fastball up in the zone, a little piece of cheddar, into left center field that barely cleared the wall. He'll do that from time to time. It proved to be the difference in this one as the Mets sent the fans home happy with a 3-1 victory.

The record now stands at 19-9. "Yeah...it's great to have the guy back, he made some really solid defensive plays, snagged a few sharp liners at third and ended up winning the game for us." Graham said after the game.
