LITTLE HOUSE OF HORRORS- METS DROP CRITICAL SERIES VS EXPOS

The slide continues for the New York Mets. "I can't even tell you how many fucking double play balls we hit into today, it had to be at least 15. Not even exaggerating" Graham said after the game. "This is beyond frustrating....what the fuck happened to our team"

Henry Rodriguez ripped 2 homeruns at Olympic Stadium where the Montreal Expos beat the New York (NL) Mets 16 to 11. Montreal kept the scorekeepers busy in the 6th inning with 8 runs on 5 hits. New York (NL) had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. (managers note: bullshit...we had no fucking chance)

The win went to Jim Bullinger(2-2) who allowed 3 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. The losing pitcher was Mark Clark(1-2). Montreal scored big getting 8 runs off him in 5 innings.

With this win, Montreal has a 14-8 record. They have been 7-3 lately. With the loss New York (NL) now has a record of 15-8.

CINCY SWEEPS METS.........SKID CONTINUES

At Shea Stadium, the New York (NL) faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's duel. John Smiley(1-3) finally bested his New York (NL) counterpart, Cory Lidle(1-3), by the score of 2 to 0.Smiley was helped out by Mike Remlinger who pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 1st save.

Lidle was the losing pitcher. He pitched 7 innings allowing only 4 hits and no walks. "Our pitchers are keeping us in the game, we just CANT SCORE ANY FUCKING GODDAMN RUNS!!!!!!!!. This is ridiculous. No one can fucking get on base and when we do we hit into double plays, let ground balls through our legs...drop easy fly balls in the outfield. Are we playing backyard ball with wiffle bats???? What the fuck is goin' on??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Graham smashed the door to the clubhouse and launched an all out tirade. The media was not privy to what happened in the clubhouse, just alot of screaming. "I heard something smash against the walls. Alot of cussing out players" Jean Beaumont, of the New York Daily News reports.

"Somethings gotta fucking change" Graham said leaving the stadium- some fans threw water bottles and plastic beer bottles at Graham's beat up chevy nova as he pulled out of the stadium. The Mets season started with a whirlwind- going 13-3, pitching a no-hitter, now things are starting to drastically spiral out of control. The bullpen is tired, relievers are getting called up from AAA. The walks are out of control. Not to mention...... the injuries are piling up, first Hundley went down, finally gets back, and the Mets lose one of their best defensive players, and Huskey, known for timely doubles clearing the gaps. "We need to stay afloat" a disgruntled Mets fan said, leaving the stadium.

The Mets will now travel to Monteal to take on the Expos. Nowhere to go but up from here.

METS FORCE EXTRAS WITH HEROICS IN 9TH....... AGAIN, LOSE......AGAIN

Reggie Sanders collected 4 RBI with one swing of the bat as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the New York (NL) Mets in 12 innings by the score of 10 to 6 at Shea Stadium.Cincinnati and New York (NL) each finished the afternoon with 11
hits.

The win went to Jeff Shaw(3-0) who allowed 2 runs in 4 innings. Hector Carrasco earned his 1st save. The loss was charged to Mel Rojas(0-1) in relief. He allowed Cincinnati 3 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings of work.

"WE CANNOT KEEP WAITING UNTIL THE END OF THE GAME TO SHOW UP" Graham said, very heated...pounding the table at the post game presser. "I'm sick of this, every game we play like dogshit until the last inning and finally decide to show up. That's NOT going to cut it. Injuries aren't an excuse"

METS LOSE ALFONZO FOR 10 GAMES- HUSKEY FOR 15, FALL TO CUBS IN FINAL GAME OF HOMESTAND.

At Shea Stadium the Chicago (NL) Cubs easily handled the New York (NL) Mets in 10 innings by the score of 7 to 3.Chicago (NL) finished with 12 hits while New York (NL) ended up with 6.

Terry Adams(1-2) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs in 1 and 1/3 innings. Cory Lidle(1-2) was hit with the loss in relief. He surrendered 4 runs and 5 hits in 1 inning.

The Mets forced extras in the bottom of the 9th by scratching across 3 runs, and fought to the bitter end, but the bench was to depleted with injuries and the comeback falls short. The Mets took the first 3 games but the sweep wasnt in the cards folks.

"I'm proud of our team....we could have given up, but we fought. The loss is a loss but we played hard and thats the mentality we need" Graham said after the game. "Injuries are gonna hurt us over the next week, we lost some big guys; were gonna need some people to step up"

METS HOST CUBBIES IN 4 GAME SET

METS VS CUBS
Kevin Foster vs Dave Mlicki
7:05 pm Shea Stadium
Friday, Apr 18 1997

by Larry Abraham

Dave Mlicki (2-0, 1.13 era) will duel against Kevin Foster (1-1, 3.10 era) Friday, Apr 18th. The last time Mlicki took the field he pitched a no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants. Mlicki isn't focused on that anymore, just ready to look ahead he said in a press conference. "I'm ready to get on with the season, we; as a team, have to come out and play like we have been playing. I'm not going to change anything, it's been working; I have been doing alot of strength conditioning this offseason and its paid dividends"

Fans will no doubt remember, and he is sure to get a standing ovation when he takes the field. Mlicki will have to go head to head against power threat Sammy Sosa (.333 avg, 3 hr 11 rbi). Aside from Sosa, their isnt alot that can hurt you. "I told him just be agressive, dont be afraid of anyone- attack, attack, attack" Graham said, he goes on with a piece of advice for Mlicki and the rest of his staff: "Be like an animal out there- fear no one, if you hit someone with a pitch smile and taunt them, make them afraid"

The Mets are off to one of the best starts in baseball, but the team isn't impressed. Brian McRae, whose home run numbers are drastically up from what they normally are, said he credits strength and conditioning coaches, but said the team doesnt care about records or stats right now. "Look...it's nice we're winning, but that doesnt mean [expletive deleted] if we bog down and blow the division or get swept, it's world series or bust for us". "We have an off day before the game, we're just gonna use it to rest some of our guys" Graham said.

Graham likes to switch the lineup around from time to time, but their are two mainstays he refuses to bobble around as long as they keep playing like they do, John Olerud (.340 avg, 3 hr 5 rbi) and Todd Hundley (.308 avg, 2 hr 5 rbi). "I love those guys at 3 and 4 in the lineup. Olerud has been drawing alot of walks, and thats fine with me, because I know they'll pay for it. With Gilkey and Huskey on deck after that- there really isnt escaping. One way or another.....we're gonna get ya"

That has been the theme of this team, numbers coming from across the board, no one player is exceptional, but everyone produces. "I've seen it happen a few times already, pitchers getting comfortable after the 3-4-5. I just smile in the dugout, because I know anyone of the people in this lineup can produce." Graham stated. "The players make my job very easy. If I have a good stealer on I'll tell him to hold, let the guys do what they get paid to do- drive in runs, and it's working so far"

The Mets are a perfect 5-0 at home. The Chicago Cubs road record is a dismal 2-4.

Will we see a repeat of Mlicki's dominating start last time out? Will the Mets continue perfection at home? Or will the Cubs come in and pull out a series upset.

We'll find out soon enough.

REYNOSO TWIRLS GEM- METS TOPPLE DODGERS TO TAKE SERIES

Armando Reynoso had a strong outing as the New York (NL) Mets defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 2 to 0 at Shea Stadium. "Hell of a game, anytime we can get a pitcher to pitch that effectively and give our bullpen a break is a huge plus- that's what we needed him to do and he delivered" Graham said after the game.

Reynoso(1-0) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the Los Angeles batters. He didn't allow much, just 2 hits and no walks in 8 innings improving his ERA from 1.23 to 0.59. Los Angeles threatened in the
9th but New York (NL) was able to put down the rally.

Reynoso got relief help from John Franco who gained credit for his 7th save. The loss was charged to Ramon Martinez(2-1). Los Angeles' manager was in a sour mood after the game. 'Even you guys up in the press box know why we lost this game. We made too many mistakes.'

"We're on a roll right now, but we HAVE to stay focused, that is key"

HUNDLEY-GILKEY GO BACK TO BACK, MAYOR GIVES MLICKI KEY TO CITY

Fans showed up early for Sunday's game against the visiting Giants, and it wasn't to see Bonds smack balls out of the park during batting practice. The 48,544 fans that showed up to watch the Mets host the Giants in game two of the homestand got to see a special ceremony take place on the mound before the first pitch was thrown. Dave Mlicki met the mayor and commissioner Harry Scanlon at the top of the mound, where he recieved congratulations and a key to the city. "Its a tremendous honor" Mlicki said trying to hold back tears. Cory Lidle offered a hug on the way out to the mound and the crowd roared as Mlicki walked back to the dugout. It was a sight to behold- and one that will be engraved into Mets fans hearts for years to come.

Bernard Gilkey went yard and had 4 RBI as the New York (NL) Mets beat the San Francisco Giants by a score of 6 to 4.Both teams totaled 7 hits on the afternoon.

The big blow of the game occured in the bottom of the 6th inning, when Todd Hundley led off with a solo shot to right, and Bernard Gilkey followed suit, blasting one into the crowd. That proved to be the difference in the game as the Mets beat the Giants 6-4.

Greg McMichael(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. John Franco gained credit for his 5th save.  Pat Rapp(0-2) ended up with the loss.

The Mets are off to a good start under new manager Eric Graham, where they have posted an 8-3 record. Graham claims "The records not important right now, we know the Marlins and Braves are going to catch fire sooner or later. Right now we just have to keep winning games and keep trying to part ourselves in a good position to take the division. We havent played those teams yet, and when we do- those are the series we need to take, anything can happen, momentum can swing and things can change very easily"

METS TO HONOR MLICKI BEFORE GAME

by Clyde Hawkins

Dave Mlicki gave one of the most dominating performances in recent memory, pitching just the second no-hitter in opening day history, walking only 3 batters before a packed house at Shea Stadium. Fans will get to show their appreciation before game two of the homestand. Mlicki will hand out the lineup card and a pre-game ceremony to follow to honor the achievement.

Mlicki wasn't available before the game to comment, however; made it clear yesterday "It was a great win, sure it was absolutely amazing to do what I did, and I'm so thankful to the fans for their support, but the most important thing was that we got the win. To me.... bragging is unbecoming, if you play the game the right way, and play hard, personal accomplishments will take care of themselves, and people will talk about you, you dont have to talk about yourself"

Mlicki has now solidified himself as being in the starting rotation, and solidified himself in Mets history. The Mets sold out tickets within minutes of the final pitch last night. Graham arrived early to the game today and issued this statement to the media and the fans:

"Well, to be honest, I'm glad we got it out of the way. When a pitcher goes out like that, and gives you maybe 6 or 7 innings without a hit, you cant help but think about it- it crosses  your mind alot, you dont wanna jinx yourself, but you cant not think about it. If they broke it up in the late innings, I think I would be more devastated than Dave, I wanted it real bad for him. Now we can put this aside and go on with the season. I think this is a great message to the rest of our staff, If your not afraid to go after hitters, instead of working around the zone, trusting your stuff, with a little luck- this is the reward. I want to thank all the fans last night, unbelievable; the atmosphere was electric. You guys are a huge part of this, thank you!!!"

If you plan on attending today's game please come early, parking will be limited and you dont want to miss the on-field ceremony.

NO HITTER!!!!!!! MLICKI NO HITS THE GIANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave Mlicki delivers a pitch during the 8th inning.

Dave Mlicki is a back of the rotation starter- questionable in spring training to make the team; and on a cool crisp day at shea stadium, he did something only one other man has done before. The Cleveland Indians' Bob Feller left the Chicago White Sox hitless on Apr 16, 1940, and 57 years later, Dave Mlicki of the New York Mets joins that sacred list tossing 9 innings of no-hit ball to stun the Giants and turn Shea Stadium into a party. A party with 35,000+ screaming, shrieking after every pitch, gritting their teeth- and after Vizcaino's ground out in the 9th, a massive eruption heard around Queens.  The second opening day no-hitter in baseball history.

The partisan crowd cheered every San Francisco out from the 7th inning on. He
walked 3 San Francisco batters. The New York (NL) players and coaches
started to leave Mlicki alone with his thoughts after the game reached the
7th inning. By the time the 9th inning rolled around, you could hear a pin
drop every time he went to his wind-up - and an explosion after every out.
San Francisco could do no damage in the 9th.

Terry Mulholland(1-1) absorbed the loss. It took a while to pry Mlicki away
from his teammates as they all wanted to show their appreciation and joy.
Finally, however, Eric Graham got to offer his own congratulations with a big
bear hug and the comment, 'That was one of the best pitched games I have seen
in all my years in baseball - Mlicki was masterful out there this afternoon!'

"I'm  holding back tears, I was shaking during the dugout in the 9th inning. This is, I cant even describe it.... this is amazing. I'm so fucking proud, he pitched his ass off out there, our defense stepped up, jesus christ...a no-hitter" Graham stated. "We were aware of what was going on in the 7th, I didn't think it would happen, he just kept mowing down hitters, it was... fate, I cant even describe how I feel right now. Jesus fucking christ I honestly cant believe this, in our home opener, in front of 35,000 fans. I cant..... [sobbing] fucking believe this. Im sorry" Graham said noticeably choked up.

Mlicki was reached for comment in the clubhouse, soaked in beer from his teammates. "Man, I cant believe what I just did, this was a total team effort, my defense bailed me out several times...and thats what this is all about man... this is a team, it hasnt really hit me yet what just happened, probably wont til' I show up for work tomorrow... this is incredible"

This game will forever be etched in Shea Stadium history, and baseball history.

Congratulations Dave Mlicki on your no-hitter.
